Landman Terms

The American Association of Petroleum Landmen.


BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT (BLM)

A Governmental Agency within the Department of the Interior responsible for managing and administering public lands.


LAND BROKERAGE COMPANY

An organization that offers its services to Oil and Gas Companies for the purpose of determining who the mineral owners are in a given area and negotiating to purchase their Oil, Gas and Other Mineral Rights on behalf of their Client. Typically, independent landmen work for a land brokerage company.


LAND DEPARTMENT

This is generally the title given to the department within an Oil Company that is responsible for all issues related to acquiring and administering mineral and surface rights in order for the company to explore for and produce oil and gas wells.


PETROLEUM LANDMAN

A person, male or female, whose role is that of contacting mineral rights owners regarding the leasing of their mineral interests for oil and gas production. Landmen often are independent contractors.


LIMITED TITLE NOTES

“The investigation and interpretation of the instruments and monuments incident to a chain of title to determine their effect and condition in order to reach a conclusion as to the status of the title that is subject to certain limitations... “


MINERAL OWNERSHIP REPORT

A detailed report identifying the specific owners and their underlying percentage of ownership to their particular tract of land.


PLAY

A set of oil or gas accumulations sharing similar geologic, geographic properties, such as source rock, hydrocarbon type, and migration pathways.


RUNSHEET

A landman’s list and brief description of all documents that relate to the history of ownership of a specific tract of land.


SCHEDULE OF INTEREST

A detailed report that identifies the owners and their percentages of the subject lands.
